Red Hat finds Microsoft a new partner

Modern companies are changing their way of working with the cloud. The cloud is changing the way companies operate. This is a new trend in tech, and companies are trying to keep up with it as cloud computing training becomes more important for their employees. This has forced many companies to change their business models, and Microsoft is the best example of this with its recent changes to its business strategy.
Microsoft is no longer a formidable and vicious competitor in the world of software development. Microsoft recently published a blog post that discussed how it needed to adapt to the changing landscape for cloud-based services. This included a surprising partnership with Red Hat, a long-standing software rival.
What is the deal?
Scott Guthrie (executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise Group), wrote the blog post to discuss the shift in cloud services conversation. Guthrie says that companies are asking less “why cloud” in exchange for a question about “how cloud”.
Companies looking to the future can’t ignore the cloud’s benefits. This shift in conversation reflects how these businesses plan to integrate their existing infrastructure and knowledge into cloud computing. Guthrie says this will require a lot more flexibility for cloud customers. Microsoft seems to believe it can be achieved by partnering with Red Hat.
The main implication of this partnership will be the availability Red Hat software (such its Linux applications) for customers of Microsoft’s Azure cloud service. Companies that want their employees to learn Azure and also wish to use Linux will not have to choose between them.
Red Hat and Microsoft will also work together to reduce helpdesk confusion. They will create a support team made up of employees from both companies. This will further strengthen the partnership.
Microsoft has partnered with past rivals before.
This partnership will be a surprise to anyone who is familiar with the history and evolution of software development. Red Hat and Microsoft have always had very different business models. Red Hat is known for providing open-source solutions, whereas Microsoft has kept its software’s inner workings close to its chest.
Microsoft recognizes that it is better to let bygones be bygones in today’s times. This is evident in Microsoft’s partnership with VMware. It was a union that broke through years of bitter rivalry between these two companies.
The Wall Street Journal reports that financial details regarding the Red Hat deal are not yet available. However, it isn’t unreasonable to assume that there will be a lot more money flowing in both directions as a result of this partnership.
According to Guthrie’s post Red Hat stands to gain a lot from Microsoft’s Azure cloud services. More than 80 percent of Fortune 500 businesses use them, Guthrie says. Red Hat’s numerous applications will allow for greater flexibility in the hybrid cloud market. Microsoft will also benefit from this deal.
Although the monetary aspect is what these companies are focusing on, it is nice to see some collaboration in an industry that is often very competitive. Red Hat and Microsoft are going to do a lot of good things together.
